"Dumka": Dedicated to Ukraine. Trios for violin, cello and piano
Event Information
About this event
Elixir presents two trios for violin, cello and piano
"dumka" is a term introduced into Slavic languages from the Ukrainian.
Originally, it is the diminutive form of the term Duma, which refers to epic ballads, specifically a song or lament of captive people. During the nineteenth century, composers from other Slavic countries began using the duma as a classical form used to indicate a brooding, introspective composition with cheerful sections interspersed within.
Rebecca Clarke: Trio
Both defiant and elegiac, this trio (1921) is expressive and emotionally complex, yet bathed in exquisite sonorities reminiscent of the French school. The bugle call motive seems to recall the experiences of the Great War. Yet the work concludes with an irrepressible playfulness. This is a major work by this eminent British-American violist and composer.
Antonin Dvorak: “Dumky” Trio
One of his most beloved works that hardly needs an introduction, Dvorak contrasts moods of reflection and melancholy with recollected dances of exuberance and innocence, rousing us to a merry conclusion.
