Description

Title: Early Childhood Education Programming and Pathways to Stewardship and Kinship Model - Raising Healthy Children for a Healthy Planet.

Short Description:

A Workshop for Designing ECE Programming with a focus on sustainability by incorporating an Early Childhood Education Program model for raising the next generation of stewards.

The challenges facing our children seem daunting and overwhelming. And clearly the response needs to be systemic, integrated and comprehensive. The Pathways to Stewardship & Kinship model http://campkawartha.ca/pdf/Pathway-to-Stewardship.pdf is an innovative, multi-sectoral approach to sustainability education that involves stakeholders within the entire region from a variety of sectors including education, Indigenous Leaders, health, conservation, post-secondary institutions and many others. This workshop will focus on experiential learning in the natural environment, including tools, practical examples and case studies regarding the Pathways to Stewardship& Kinship Framework and Fleming's Eco-mentorship model. These programs represent a unique experience in delivering Early Childhood Education Programming as a partner in the Peterborough Kawartha Halliburton Region, with a focus on sustainability.

In 2016, the Peterborough Kawartha and Haliburton Region was designated as a United Nations University Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE) in Sustainability Education http://www.greenup.on.ca/program/regional-centre-expertise-rce-peterborough-kawartha-haliburton/. One of the goals of the RCE is:

"To implement age-appropriate sustainability and stewardship education frameworks from pre-school to secondary school, in both formal and informal settings"

Please contact Trish O'Connor at trish.oconnor@flemingcollege.ca or at 705-749-5520 ext. 1067 for more information and to register.

This workshop coincides with the area’s recent designation as a Regional Centre for Expertise in Sustainability Education (RCE) under the United Nations University and as endorsed by UNESCO. One of the main priorities of the RCE is to engage Indigenous Knowledge across all curricula. The workshop and this overarching effort reflects the ambition of the region to infuse sustainability at all ages and stages of life-long learning and to share best practices across regions in doing so.
