About this Event

Taking Care of Ourselves and Others: Understanding and Responding to Mental Health Concerns

In this workshop, participants will learn about a variety of mental health concerns and how these present in individuals and families, including stress, depression, anxiety, family conflict, perinatal mood disorders, suicidal ideation, etc. Participants will learn effective communication strategies to positively engage with and support caregivers and families accessing their services when concerns are present, which includes de-escalation skills to respond to individuals presenting in distress. Additionally, the warning signs and risk factors associated with compassion fatigue and vicarious/secondary trauma will be introduced along with self-care strategies and responses that can help increase resiliency and responsiveness for staff. Mental health-related resources available for caregivers, families and staff will also be shared.

Presented by:

Wendy Beales, M.S.W., RSW, is a Family Counsellor with Family Services Durham, where she is also regularly involved in the provision of workshops on the topics of self-care, crisis de-escalation, motivational interviewing, Mental Health First Aid ™ and more. Wendy has worked for approximately 17 years in the mental health and/or addictions sectors in both Canada and Scotland with children, youth and adults which has included counselling/psychotherapy, case management and program development. Wendy is passionate about working with diverse communities and supporting individuals and families to identify and increase ways of coping in times of difficulty.

Stacey MacNeil, M. Ed, RP, is a Family Counsellor with Family Services Durham. Stacey worked for over 15 years in the Children’s Mental Health Sector, including providing clinical leadership. Stacey enjoys supporting clients of all ages to connect to their values, skills and abilities and help them achieve the goals they have set for themselves. Stacey is passionate about providing people with information about mental health that can support them professionally and personally through workshop delivery.
