Thanks to the generosity of community partners, particularly Alberta Job Corp, Sustainable Food Edmonton and Servus Credit Union, we have been able to move forward with the community garden project and a portion of the boxes will be built for this season. We will be fundraising for soil and other materials needed to ensure that our residents may begin gardening this spring!

According to the Government of Canada Report on the Social Isolation of Seniors, an estimated 30 percent of Canadian seniors are at risk of becoming socially isolated. Further, “socially isolated seniors are more at risk of negative health, have a higher likelihood of falls; and, have a four-to-five times greater risk of hospitalization. Replacing and rebuilding our Community Garden boxes is the focus of this Letter of Intent, as seniors are disproportionately affected by social isolation and many face financial issues that lead them to struggle with food insecurity and poor health outcomes. According to Statistics Canada, nearly 15% of seniors are living below the poverty line in Canada.

Currently, there are very few community gardens that are accessible to our residents, many of whom have mobility issues. Providing on-site, accessible garden facilities is crucial to ensure food sustainability and to lower food costs amongst our residents, as well as to increase the sense of community within our centre. In addition, there is a high need for community gardens in Edmonton, with long waitlists. If we can provide boxes for community members as well, it will help ensure that more Edmontonians have access to garden space, which will help with overall food security and nutrition. We hope that our community garden will encourage food sharing, as many of our resident gardeners already put out the food that they grow for other residents to take, as needed. To encourage this, we hope to have seminars on cooking with fresh vegetables and fruits, crop sustainability as well as instruction on preserves and canning. We are also working on an intergenerational gardening program with a local school.
