Event description

Are you new to the world of landscape photography? Or perhaps you've been shooting for a while but want better control over your camera and other gear? Looking to boost your creativity or compositions? Want to learn long exposure photography? Are you dissatisfied with how your photos turn out? Do you want to take your landscape photography to the next level? Interested in learning how to transition from daylight to nighttime shooting in a city Environment? Feel unsafe walking around with your camera after sunset and want to be part of a small like-minded group to shoot with?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, my evening photography workshop may be right for you. Set at a relaxed, comfortable pace, this 3 hour lesson will cover everything you need to improve your landscape photography, including finding compelling compositions, understanding and making the best of the light and other enviromental conditions, and optimum camera settings to get the exposure as correct as possible in camera.

This workshop will be limited to 4 participants so you will have lots of hands on support with the instructor.

You will come away with a much better idea of how to plan and take landscape photos, how to transition from sunset to the blue hour, and be able to use your camera on manual priority mode.

What Is Involved:

The default location is the Walter Dale Bridge, however we may not nessecarily hold the workshop at that location. I will be in contact a few days before the workshop to communicate where we will be meeting. We will meet at a scenic landscape photography location in/around the city of Edmonton, locations will be shared privately to registrants before the event.

After a quick introduction, we'll cover the following items:

  • How to choose a composition, using foreground elements and anchors, rule of thirds
  • Discuss types of light and how to make them work for you
  • Discussion of smartphone apps you can use to help your photography
  • Using neutral denisty filters for long exposure photography (if you have them)
  • Create stunning photographs as the light transitions from golden hour to blue hour
  • How to focus in low light conditions
  • Creating traffic light trails and starbursts from streetlamps

I will give guidance and support on photographing the sunset, instructions about using neutral density filters for long exposure, and how to transition to the blue hour before we wrap up with any final questions.

What to Bring:

  • A DSLR or mirrorless camera with removeable lenses
  • A wide angle lens (preferably 24mm or wider for full frame, 16mm or wider for crop cameras) and a telephoto lens (optional) with a focal length of at least 140mm for shooting abstract details of the landscape
  • A sturdy tripod
  • Neutral density filter(s) would be an asset
  • A remote shutter trigger would be an asset
  • Dress appropriately for the weather, good shoes or boots for short walking and possibly navigating uneven terrain, and warm layers for unpredictable Alberta weather
