Mine tour – Syncrude’s Aurora Mine
The Syncrude Aurora North mine, commonly referred to as Aurora, is an open-pit mining operation extracting bitumen in the Athabasca Oil Sands. The mine is located 80km north of Fort McMurray in northeastern Alberta and produces approximately 200,000 bbls/day of bitumen from 300,000 tonnes/day of oil sand, and moves an additional 350,000 tonnes/day of waste materials. The Aurora truck and shovel mining operation consists of a mixed fleet of ultra-class cable shovels and a Caterpillar 797 truck fleet which includes the original 1997 Field Development Program trucks.
