Join us for the upcoming FREE PKD Patient Forum in Edmonton, AB!

 

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is one of the most common life-threatening, genetic diseases affecting Canadians and can result in the growth of cysts that enlarge the affected kidneys, destroying its ability to function.

 

Patients and their loved ones are invited to join this forum to:

  • Learn about what a PKD diagnosis can mean for you or a loved one, as well as how PKD can be managed from Dr. Steven S Caldwell, BSc(Hons), DipMedSci, MBChB(Hons), FRCPC, FRCP Edin, FRCP Lond, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta. 
  • Hear about what resources and support systems are available to you and your loved ones from Jeff Robertson, Executive Director, PKD Foundation of Canada;

  • Have your questions answered during a Q&A period led by Dr. Steven S Caldwell and Jeff Robertson; and,

  • Meet other people living with PKD in your community.

Light food & beverages will be served.

About the Speaker:

 

 

Steven S Caldwell, BSc(Hons), DipMedSci, MBChB(Hons), FRCPC, FRCP Edin, FRCP Lond, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta. 

 

Steven Caldwell, MBChB, is Clinical Professor of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology and Transplant Immunology and Associate Chair of Undergraduate Medical Education for the Department of Medicine at the University of Alberta. He also holds the position of Honorary Professor at both the School of Medicine at St Andrews University and the College of Medicine & Veterinary Medicine, Edinburgh University, Scotland. Dr. Caldwell is an Attending Physician with responsibility for inpatient and outpatient care, haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, renal transplant, satellite haemodialysis, and emergency triage & treatment of renal patients. He is also Director of the Westlock Rural Nephrology Clinic and Haemodialysis Unit. 

 

Dr. Caldwell received his medical degree with honors from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, and a diploma in medical science from St. Andrews University, Scotland. He also attended Queen's University, Kingston and holds an Honors BSc (microbiology & immunology) from the University of Toronto. He is certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology by, and a Fellow of, the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada. He is also a Fellow of both the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and of the Royal College of Physicians of London. He currently serves as the Student Mentor for the St. Andrews/Edinburgh/Alberta International Medical Programme and holds the position of Emeritus Overseas Regional Adviser for Canada for the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. Dr Caldwell is a former Visiting Consultant Nephrologist for the Myrtle Rigby Health Authority of the Turks & Caicos Islands.

 

Dr. Caldwell is an Examiner for the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada, a PACES examiner for the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and former Course Co-director of the Mini Medical School at the University of Alberta. 

He runs a specialty clinic for patients with Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD) and his research interests include ADPKD, diabetes and diabetic nephropathy, hypertension, lupus nephritis, and medical education.

 

Dr. Caldwell has authored or coauthored articles published in several peer-reviewed journals, such as Transplantation Proceedings (2010) and the American Journal of Kidney Disease (2005) as well as from his post graduate research in the Journal of Invertebrate Pathology (1990). His research in Medical Education has been received at the Canadian Conference on Medical Education (2014) and by the Association of Medical Educators of Europe (2013 & 2015).
