SQL Server 2014 In-Memory OLTP

Speaker: Mohit Gupta, SQL Server – Premier Field Engineer Microsoft

Summary: Microsoft SQL Server 2014 introduced new In-Memory OLTP Engine for improving the performance of OLTP workload, code named Hekaton. In this discussion we will look at the overview of what In-Memory OLTP means, how does it impact our current workloads? In addition how can we implement it and what changes you need to think about going forward in order to make effective use of it? In addition to this, we will also look at the configuration and some of the basic troubleshooting techniques you will need to be aware of when implementing In-Memory OLTP.

About Mohit: My background is development, from University, to Graduate Studies, I delved in most major languages and I do truly enjoy development. When I finished my under graduate degree and was hired as Developer for Microsoft Access. I had opportunity to manage and using SQL Server 6.5 as my SQL Server RDBMS. This was back in 2005, I didn’t think must off it. However as time went on, I had further opportunities to get more involved in SQL Server, to becoming Backup DBA. So I had chance to learn SQL Server 6.5 and SQL Server 2000. While working on these I quickly learned there was a lot more to SQL Server then meets the eyes. It is not simple, “install and forget it” application. Around 2006 or so, I was having lots of performance issues with an application in SQL Server 2000, I tried to do all the right things around resource consumption and performance monitoring. However couldn’t resolve the performance issues, so my organization at that time brought a CTS engineer down to help us out. I worked with the CTS engineer for an entire week, that’s when I learned what it was really meant to be SQL Server DBA. Thus started my journey on becoming truly SQL Server DBA. Since 2006 to until now, I have studied SQL Server diligently and absolutely love the product and is my passion. Now working as SQL Server PFE for Microsoft Canada (for almost 4 years), focusing on Database Engine. I have to say has been truly an enlighten experience, I have learned so much more about SQL Server as I traveled across Canada and parts of USA. I think I have visited some 80 different customer sites dealing with different issues and questions. I focus my efforts in HADR (Clustering, AGs, and DB Mirroring) and Performance Tuning for SQL Server.
