Event description

Description

“Education for Our Times” is a Gandhi Peace Festival and McMaster University collaborative conference to mark the 25th anniversary of Hamilton’s Gandhi Festival. The conference is free and open to the general public, however, registration is required to attend the conference.

The conference seeks to address questions about and, potentially, rethink the role of education in these challenging times of rising virulent nationalisms all over the globe and increasing violence against racial, ethnic, and religious minorities. It will advance knowledge and understanding of a wide range of issues pertaining to education for promoting diversity, social justice, and peaceful coexistence among myriad communities. It solicits the participation of local and global community leaders, scholars, peace activists, students/youth, and the wider public. The conference theme invites reflection on how our scholarly, artistic, activist, and pedagogical work helps us think through and navigate the crises of our times.

The conference will feature talks by Bob Rae, Canadian lawyer who works with First Nations across Canada, public speaker and former politician, Dr. Patrick Deane, President and Vice-Chancellor of McMaster University and Dr. Henry Giroux, McMaster University Chair for Scholarship in the Public Interest. Other events include research panels and roundtables with scholars, community organizations and social justice groups; and creative performances and artists’ talks.

We are grateful to the following McMaster sponsors:

International Office; Faculty of Humanities; MacPherson Institute for Leadership, Innovation and Excellence in Teaching; President’s Office; Office of Community Engagement, Institute of Globalization and the Human Condition, and the Department of English and Cultural Studies.

Note: Please complete one registration form per attendee.
