Event description

Description

The North Dakota Department of Public Instruction (NDDPI) is working with the North Central Comprehensive Center (NCCC) to enhance instruction for K-12 English learners (ELs). The NDDPI conducted a train the trainer session in the Fall of 2017. In response to requests to continue this work, the NDDPI has once again partnered with the NCCC to provide an additional train the trainer event.

Program Objectives:

  • Increase the state's capacity to support general education/content teachers in providing high quality instruction for ELs.

  • Ensure the quality of professional development provided by the cadre members meets high standards and is delivered with quality, fidelity, intensity, and consistency.

We are looking for knowledgeable EL Specialists willing to attend a two-day training to prepare them to provide PD for schools and districts to meet the demand in ND. This training includes a series of training modules to prepare qualified staff developers and coaches to deliver PD modules on discourse structures for schools and districts. The modules included in this training are described below:

Module 1, Stages of Second Language Acquisition: In this module, participants will be introduced to the five stages of second language acquisition, which are aligned to Bloom’s Taxonomy.

Module 2, Setting Language Objectives: Participants will be introduced to a two-step process for setting language objectives: (1) determine language function, and (2) determine language structure.

Module 3, Nonlinguistic Representations and Cooperative Learning: Participants will learn about the five different kinds of nonlinguistic representations and how to apply them to vocabulary instruction for learning.

Module 4, Academic Language Framework: Participants will apply what they have learned from Modules 1-3 in order to reveal the language demands of their subject matter.

Module 5, Classroom Demonstration of Strategies from Classroom Instruction That Works with English Language Learners: Each module builds background knowledge and skills in preparation for the fifth module, when participants will be able to view strategies in action in an elementary classroom.

Module 5A - Elementary: Participants will see examples of a teacher implementing the following strategies: setting language objectives, nonlinguistic representations, cooperative learning, similarities and differences, and providing feedback.

Module 6, Reciprocal Teaching: Presents a well-researched based strategy for improving reading comprehension where participants will review four literacy skills needed to meet standards in grades K-12.

The training will be March 20-21, 2018 from 8:00-4:00 each day with registration beginning at 7:30 am.

Credit will be available through the University of Mary. Registration information for credit will be sent to registrants upon confirmation.
