He describes his business approach as ‘street level’, knowledge based on experience. Jim has a B.Sc (Hon) in math and physics from the University of Alberta, and a Ph.D. in Medical Biophysics from the University of Toronto. After a few years in academia, he and two other partners started Cedarlane Laboratories in 1975, focused on manufacturing products for medical research and diagnostics. He has been a partner in three other start-up companies, and an investor and consultant in two additional start-ups. The product focus of these companies have ranged from medical, veterinary, cosmetics and specialty chemicals. Out of the six companies, five are still active or been purchased by others. Jim’s more formal business training has included workshops and courses provided by Business Development Bank, professional trainers and University courses.
