About this event

Elements of Truth: BEFORE RECONCILIATION

Elements of Truth: Before Reconciliation is an experiential 10-hour workshop series guided by the Indigenous values of reciprocity, inclusion, curiosity, and humility. Elements of Truth is delivered via Zoom in four 2.5-hour parts over four weeks. Participants can expect an informative, interactive, engaging and transformative learning experience.

1. Earth: Impacts of Colonization

2. Air: Expanding Perspectives

3. Fire: Awareness of Power and Privilege

4. Water: Shared Responsibilities

We encourage you to attend all four workshops in the series (Earth, Air, Fire and Water) but have designed Elements of Truth so that you can learn, participate, and contribute to any workshop regardless of whether you are a new or returning participant.

What to Expect

Our approach is often described as medicine for relationships because of the encouragement and inspiration it provides. To foster inspiration, our workshops use fun activities that engage the imagination to help us expand our thinking. Indigenous ways of learning are experiential and holistic. In Indigenous culture, learning is about observation, action, reflection, relationships and storytelling.

“I appreciated the connecting exercises...there are plenty of lectures and information-loaded workshops online—this workshop was powerful because of its personal connections and chance to experience a different style of facilitation and learning.” Elements of Truth EARTH participant, September 2021

In our workshops, we use the arts to help us develop flexible thinking so we can shift our patterns of being in relationships. Our workshops model learning environments that foster emotional safety, where we can courageously practice disrupting our unconscious social patterns.

“I feel so enriched by the workshop...It is brilliant—and one of the best I have ever attended.” Elements of Truth AIR participant, February 2022

The purpose of these workshops is to facilitate a deeper awareness of the truth of Canada’s relationship with Indigenous peoples and set in motion a desire to contribute to change.

As we implement the principles and skills introduced, we increase capacity for:

Courage: the confidence to be imperfect, to be in the unknown, to hear challenging ideas, to feel, to be vulnerable, and to stretch beyond our comfort.

Compassion: kindness, building understanding of others experiences, honouring differences.

Inclusion: the ability to notice your position of power and privilege and respond with equity and inclusion.

Social-Cultural Literacy: the use of respectful terms, some knowledge of history and place.

“I was reminded how much power I have to either contribute to or disrupt white supremacy and racialized harm, and the opportunity to be more authentic, connected, and attentive in relationship to the people I share spaces with.” Elements of Truth WATER participant, February 2022
