The Stitched Aesthetic: The Art of Repair inspired by Japanese Textiles by Kate Ward

Japanese textiles that have been pieced, patched, repaired and passed down from generation to generation are known as boro. The embroidered and repaired clothes embrace the concept of 'wabi sabi', beauty in an object's impermanence and imperfection, making a
feature of the repair is an alternative to the art of invisible mending.

In this workshop, students learn running stitch and Sashiko stitches, combined with the layering of cloth to create beautiful artworks. Students will be encouraged to combine reclaimed materials, surface design and repair techniques, using Boro-inspired stitching into unique and personal art pieces.

Taking the time to create something really unique is a beautiful way of connecting with a garment or textile. Each repair becomes a creative challenge, a chance for the sewer to express themselves whilst also being an important time for contemplation and mindfulness. And because mistakes and wonky stitching can be embraced it's the perfect project for beginner sewers.
