Event description
Hear from professionals in Ontario's municipal transportation & infrastructure sector about what a career in this field looks like.

About this event

Emerging Municipal Leaders Forum

Looking for a long-term career that offers development, benefits and a wide variety of possibilities? Have you thought about the municipal sector?

The wave of retirements currently hitting Ontario's municipalities will continue for the next 5-10 years. In this time, over 50% of municipal employees will be eligible for retirement! As municipalities provide the essential services that are key to maintaining a high quality of life, it is imperative that they be staffed by qualified and competent individuals. Those working in this field help ensure that our infrastructure doesn't collapse, that our roads remain clear, and that our water is safe to drink.

As part of the 2022 Good Roads Conference, students will have the opportunity to speak directly with municipal professionals about the important work they do every day. Panelists will share their thoughts and experiences with students interested in this type of career. Those in attendance will learn:

  • Why they should consider a career in municipal government;
  • The type of knowledge, skills, abilities/competencies, or qualifications required to work for their municipality;
  • What it takes to succeed;
  • Opportunities for growth;
  • How the industry is evolving; and
  • What to expect in this line of work.

The panel discussion will be followed by a networking session. Students will have the opportunity to speak directly to those working in municipal government.

Speakers

  • Melissa Abercrombie, Manager, Engineering Services, Oxford County
  • Nazzareno Capano, Manager of Transportation Policy and Innovation, City of Toronto
  • John Parsons, Division Manager, Road Operations and Forestry, City of London
  • Aakash Desai, Asset Coordinator & Financial Analyst, Township of Southgate

Organizer Good Roads

Organizer of Emerging Municipal Leaders Forum

Good Roads is a municipal association concerned with the advancement of roads and other infrastructure in Ontario. Based in Oakville, Ontario, we have been devoted to the cause of better roads since 1894. Originally known as the Ontario Good Roads Association (and still using that name corporately), we have more than 450 member governments, including most of Ontario’s municipalities and a growing number of First Nations, as well as dozens of affiliated corporate members in the transportation and infrastructure sectors. Our purpose, in part, is to connect our members to each other, to other levels of government, and to relevant companies in the private sector. Our members look to us for training, knowledge, political advocacy, and answers to their most pressing problems. Good Roads is resolutely independent.
