Description

The Emily Carr String Quartet Society is proud to present Music Inside Out:Smetana hosted by Robert Holliston and the Emily Carr String Quartet. Explore Bedřich Smetana with a morning of music, tea and insight into the fascinating life of the founding father of Czeck music.

A look into Smetana's life and music takes place on Saturday December 9, 2017 at 10:30 am. Tea, coffee, and sundries will be served. Discussion, analysis, and a full performance of Smetana's String Quartet no. 1 "From My Life" in E minor are included in the mornings program.

Our host, Robert Holliston, an accomplished accompanist and chamber player, has performed throughout Canada, the USA, England, New Zealand, and has been heard frequently on CBC-Radio. A popular public speaker, Robert has given pre-performance lectures for Pacific Opera Victoria since 1993 and is POV's Principal Head Coach. Robert is currently Head of Keyboard at the Victoria Conservatory of Music, where he also teaches piano and music history, and acts as vocal coach. Robert is a founding director of the VCM Opera Studio.

The Emily Carr String Quartet has quickly established itself as one of BC's finest music ensembles. Formed in 2006 by members of the Victoria Symphony and Aventa Ensemble in Victoria BC, the Emily Carr String Quartet has performed in Canada, the USA and Europe. They have collaborated with artists such as William Preucil, Jaime Parker, Arthur Rowe, the Alcan Quartet, the Tin Alley Quartet and the Lafayette String Quartet. The quartet has also done much to honour the local painter for whom it is named. They perform works that pay homage to her, such as Jean Coulthard's Pines of Emily Carr, and have incorporated her writings into some concerts, most notably in a summer series held at Emily Carr House in 2006, 2012 and 2014. In 2011, as part of the Victoria Symphony's Emily Carr Project, it participated in the premiere of Stories from Klee Wyck, by local composer Tobin Stokes. The ECSQ is also devoted to contemporary music, and has commissioned three works from Canadian composers, inspired by Carr's work. The first was Tobin Stokes's Feathers (2014). Two other compositions were 10th anniversary commissions: Jocelyn Morlock's Big Raven (2015) and Strangled by Growth (2016) by Jared Miller. The ECSQ has been featured on CBC radio's "North by Northwest" and their CD "Hidden Treasure" was nominated for the 2012 classical recording of the year at the Western Canadian Music Awards.
