Event description

Description

Emily Nussbaum is the television critic for The New Yorker and the winner of the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for criticism. She appears to discuss her book I Like to Watch, which is a provocative collection of new and previously published essays tracking the history and culture of television.

Hear Nussbaum discuss all facets of entertainment from the rise of the female screw-up, how fans warp the shows they love, the messy power of sexual violence on TV and the year that jokes helped elect a reality television president. Join the conversation for a timely and thought-provoking examination of what we watch.

Emily Nussbaum appears to discuss her book I Like to Watch with Rachel Giese.

Q&A and book signing to follow. Books available for purchase.

Please don't print your tickets! We're trying to reduce paper waste for Appel Salon events, so please don't bother printing your ticket. We'll either scan your ticket on your smartphone or quickly find your name on our tablets and check you in.

Arrive early, meet people. The talk starts at 7 pm, but doors open at 6 pm. Come early so you can chat with your fellow literature lovers, and make new friends. As with all Appel Salon events, we'll have a cash bar with a selection of beer, wine, and liquor, as well as sandwiches and snacks.

This event is part of our signature literary series The Appel Salon, where we host local and international authors in conversation about their new books and big ideas. The Bram & Bluma Appel Salon is a literary and cultural programming space on the second floor of the Toronto Reference Library. Check out the full lineup at tpl.ca/appelsalon
