Event description

Description

The Workers’ Rights Action Group is organizing a one-day conference for employment law caseworkers and organizers in Ontario.

Where: Workers’ Action Centre – 720 Spadina Ave. (Suite 202), Toronto, Ontario

When: Thursday, June 20, all day

*We are aware that this is the same day as the Six-Minute Employment Lawyer CPD conference. The LSO conference is available as a webinar on-demand and the printed materials are available free from the Great Library online.

With the new changes to employment law coming into effect via Bill 47 and Bill 66, as well as changes to federal labour standards and the caregiver program how can employment law caseworkers effectively respond?

Interactive sessions at the conference will look at how organizing strategies can help shape the Employment Standards Act in a positive way for workers, including by identifying issues for strategic litigation and organizing.

This conference will also address how front line employment law caseworkers can most effectively undertake their employment law work: What do our current practices look like? What specific services do we offer? How do we select cases for representation? What kinds of referrals do you make? What resources are available?

The goal of the one day conference will be to survey the current employment law work being done in the clinic system, provide tools for front line workers, map out best practices and outline how we can build the capacity to effectively respond to the labour law changes in the current context.

Some of the topics to be addressed in the conference:

-The new employment laws in Bill 47, Bill 66 and at the federal level with Bill C-86 and changes to the caregiver program.

-Identifying best practices around cases and case selection.

-How to identify test cases.

-Looking at resources available for community legal workers.

-How to engage with workers in our communities.

-Developing materials to do PLEs.

-How to link strategic litigation with organizing.

Please let us know if there are any particular topics or questions you would like to see addressed at the conference. We cannot guarantee that everything will be included, but will do our best. Areas to think about include practice management, worker organizing, litigation processes, negotiation, strategic litigation, intake processes, outreach.

Email Francesca Allodi-Ross allodifir@lao.on.ca with your suggestions.

A full program will be sent out at a later date.
