Event description

Description

The Workers’ Rights Action Group is organizing a one-day conference for employment law caseworkers and organizers in Ontario.

With the new changes to employment law coming into effect via Bill 148, how can employment law caseworkers effectively respond?

Interactive sessions at the conference will look at how organizing strategies can help shape the Employment Standards Act in a positive way for workers, including by identifying issues for strategic litigation and organizing.

This conference will also address how front line employment law caseworkers can most effectively undertake their employment law work: What do our current practices look like? What specific services do we offer? How do we select cases for representation? What kinds of referrals do you make? What resources are available?

The goal of the one day conference will be to survey the current employment law work being done in the clinic system, provide tools for front line workers, map out best practices and outline how we can build the capacity to effectively respond to the changes in Bill 148.

Some of the topics to be addressed in the conference:

  • The new employment laws around Bill 148.
  • Identifying best practices around cases and case selection.
  • How to identify test cases.
  • Looking at resources available for community legal workers.
  • How to engage with workers in our communities.
  • Developing materials to do PLEs.
  • How to link strategic litigation with organizing.

The conference will take place on June 22 in Toronto at the Workers’ Action Centre (720 Spadina Ave.)
