The Famous 5 Foundation is proud to partner with Enbridge Pipelines Inc. to present the Enbridge Famous 5 Speakers Series.
The Speakers Series profiles successful women who speak candidly about their careers and the challenges and triumphs in their personal journey towards successful leadership.
Keynote Speaker: Patricia Rozema, Writer/Director
After studying philosophy at a Calvinist College in Michigan, Patricia Rozema distinguished herself at 28 with a stunning first feature, I’ve Heard The Mermaids Singing, which premiered in the Director’s Fortnight Cannes, was runner up for the Camera D’Or and sold around the world. It was the opening film at the Toronto International Film Festival in 1987.
She went on to write and direct in a broad range of styles: a controversial Miramax Jane Austen feature film, Mansfield Park, an elegant contemporary lesbian love story, When Night is Falling, a music documentary and fiction hybrid with Yo-Yo Ma which won her a Grammy nomination and an Emmy. Her script for Grey Gardens with Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange won the PEN Screenwriter's award, an Emmy nomination and a Golden Globe; she directed a children's feature, Kit Kitteridge, with Abigail Breslin, Stanley Tucci, Julia Ormond, Wally Shawn, Chris O'Donnell (A.O.Scott in the NYT named Breslin one of the Top Five Female Performances of that year). She directed the pilot and several episodes of the HBO series Tell Me You Love Me and In Treatment with Debra Winger and Gabriel Byrne.
Into The Forest, an apocalyptic thriller feature film set in the near future with Ellen Page, Evan Rachel Wood, Max Minghella, Callum Keith Rennie and Wendy Crewson, which she adapted and directed, was released in summer 2016 and she has just finished directing two episodes of the Golden Globe-winning Mozart in the Jungle.
She was recently invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the organization behind the Oscars.
Rozema is currently casting a new feature set in Paris in the 20s and 30s.
She lives with her partner, Heather Conway, and their children in Toronto, Canada.
