Event description
This workshops explores how to foster a healthy relationship to food and health with your child.

About this Event

With the vast amount of nutrition information available, it can be challenging to know how to prepare children with skills to support healthy eating. This interactive workshop will offer caregivers tips to foster a positive relationship to food and health with their children.

Participants will also:

· learn strategies of “how” to eat and their importance in setting the foundation for developing lifelong healthy eating habits.

· understand how personal beliefs and language can impact family meals and find ways to build a stronger relationship with children.

· be more aware of eating behaviour changes in children and when to seek help.

· learn about food and health resources and where to find credible health information.

About the Facilitators:

Nicole Spencer has been a dietitian for nearly 15 years. During her career, she has worked in a variety of settings including community work in Haida Gwaii and primary health care at St. Paul’s Hospital. In her current role is as a public health dietitian in Vancouver, she works with health professionals, teachers, and community partners to develop healthy eating workshops, resources, and communications. Projects she’s been involved with include the Better Together BC initiative, designed to support families to cook and eat together more often, as well as the creation of mindful eating resources for health professionals and teachers. She hopes we can work together to cut through the mainstream noise and bring joy to eating for children, youth, and their families.

Vanessa Lam is a public health dietitian who is interested in enhancing stronger connections and appreciation of food. Over the past four years, she has supported public health staff, school and community partners to promote healthy eating environments in the school setting across Vancouver. She has helped encourage student access to local foods and hands-on learning through Farm to School and Think&EatGreen@School initiatives. Prior to that, she helped coordinate a community based, early intervention program for youth at risk for disordered eating and provided nutrition education for families with young children. Her career as a Registered Dietitian spans over 18 years which includes extensive experience in public health, clinical nutrition, and community home health settings.
