The Cadario Visiting Lecture in Public Policy & Governance

A new wave of digital technological innovations, coupled with intensifying global concerns about greenhouse gas emissions, is changing the landscape for oil and gas, with significant geopolitical implications. Many resource dependent economies are evaluating new strategies for economic growth that take into account the future global energy transition, even as short term demand for fossil fuels remains high and risk of supply disruptions has accelerated since 2018. Canada plays a unique role in North American energy security and trade with its ready accessible production of traditional and clean energy. But uncertainty about the pace of the energy transition as well as financial risks associated with large-scale infrastructure development has hindered efficient deployment of energy developments. Amy Myers Jaffe will discuss the geopolitical variables that are likely to influence the global and North American energy landscape in the coming years and what they mean for Canada.
