Event Details

Diabetes can damage a number of organs, from the eyes to the kidneys and the heart. But unchecked blood sugar can affect the brain as well, which may lead to drops in cognitive functions. More people are being diagnosed with the disease earlier in life, including in childhood, and diabetes can age your brain by five years or more.

Type 2 diabetes is associated with bad performance on cognitive tests, measuring abilities involved in the control of emotions, behaviour and thought, known as executive function. This facet of brain function is particularly important because we rely on it when we are attempting to behave in a way that is contrary to our natural inclinations or what the environment impels us to do,

By controlling diabetes and hypertension, it may be possible to prevent or delay the brain damage that occurs decades later leading to memory problems and dementia. Type 2 diabetes is linked to high levels of sugar in the blood. The more sugar you consume and the longer you consume it, the higher your diabetes risk. Sugar also crosses the blood-brain barrier, and may be as damaging to the brain as extreme stress or abuse.

Discover if you are at risk and enjoy great tasting recipes for the summer season that don’t increase your sugar intake.

Enjoy light refreshments, and a chance to win fabulous door prizes.
