Event description

Description

Erato Ensemble 2019/20 Season: Sex, Silliness, and Science.

Erato Ensemble’s upcoming season includes 3 main stage concerts highlighting themes not normally seen on the concert stage. The fun, and at times controversial repertoire aims to create dialogue around subjects that are sure to tantalize and titillate.

Erato concerts always feature a wide variety of musical styles and instruments. Innovative programming and a welcoming sense of community make post concert receptions the perfect place to pick up a conversation, often with the performers and creators present.

This season, Erato is bringing those conversations right in to the concert hall. Each concert will be hosted by an expert in that theme.

SEX
OCTOBER 26, 2019
8pm @ the ANNEX

Beyond a seductive title, Erato’s season opener delivers a shame-free one-night stand. The concert will explore themes of sex, sexuality, and gender identity in a supportive and non-judgemental environment hosted by sexual health facilitator, Tanille Geib.

There’ll be no shortage of humour as we present The Sex Lives of Vegetables by Vancouver’s own Leslie Uyeda and Lorna Crozier. One particularly naughty 16th-century song by Thomas Morley will make use of props from our community partner, Vancouver’s own Womyns’ Ware.

Erato won’t be shying away from the more serious side of things, with pieces exploring gender identity and sexuality, featuring cabaret songs by Rodney Sharman and a piece by Michael Park and Vancouver poet Sajia Sultana.

SILLINESS
January 19, 2020
3pm @ Holy Trinity Anglican Church

This family friendly concert will be sure to delight audiences of all ages. Thanks to our friends at Redshift Music Society, audiences will learn the answer to the age-old question, “What happens when you put an opera singer in a Bouncy Castle?”.

Erato is saving no space for serious songs or dreary durges. For those who think concerts are meant for stifled cheers and polite applause, we say “pish posh”! Bouncing divas, singing cats, and crazy costumes will have audiences rolling in the aisles.

In addition to masterworks by Rossini, Violet Archer, and Ruth Watson Henderson, SILLINESS will feature the premiere of the world’s first Choose Your Own Art Song Adventure, written by Vancouver composer Michael Park and Victoria poet Barbara Black.

SCIENCE

MAY 30, 2019
8pm @ the ANNEX

You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to attend Erato’s season closer, but it can’t hurt! Research shows that the concert will present a varied program of music about and inspired by science.

Hosted by one of Vancouver’s most vibrant scientists, the program includes music about everything from the brain to the environment, on topics ranging from medicine to the nature of the universe. SCIENCE presents modern science in a fun, accessible environment. While most people will never see the inside of the human brain, pieces like Elizabeth Knudsen’s The Brain give a glimpse into the mysterious inner workings of humanity’s greatest marvel.

Erato Ensemble gratefully acknowledges the support of Vancouver Civic Theatres.

We acknowledge the financial support of the Province of British Columbia.
