Description

Erin Costelo and Sherry Ryan at The Ship! Winning combination, I'd say!

ERIN COSTELO

Erin Costelo is an artist who is mining the truth - through writing, arranging, producing and masterful live performance. With a voice unlike any other in Canada she has the ability to successfully float between genres and stages, her unwavering vision continuously offering the best sound and voice to a feeling, idea or story. With songs that sound like they were written by your heroes. Heavily influenced by Gospel and Americana, she’s had the opportunity to open for heroes like Mavis Staples, Dr. John and Bettye Lavette and has recently performed with Levon Helm's Midnight Ramble Band.

She has performed with a number of Canadian music legends including Joel Plaskett, Rose Cousins, Stephen Fearing and Newfoundland's own, Amelia Curran for whom she wrote and arranged the horn and string parts for her new album "Watershed".

Erin's latest, self-produced album Down Below, the Status Quo was nominated for a total of twelve awards in her home of Eastern Canada, winning the R&B/Soul award at ECMAs and the Solo Recording of the Year in her home province of Nova Scotia. It is a magical, moonlight-soaked reverie, filled with drama and intensity; in one moment a defiant cry and in the next a desperate whisper. It has been described as "embodying the spirit of Nina Simone" and "conjuring the ghost of Donny Hathaway".

SHERRY RYAN

It’s not hard to understand why Sherry Ryan has devoted fans. Drifting between country, blues and folk and beautifully marrying these genres with her distinct Newfoundland roots, she’s been releasing heart-stealing originals across each album. This gifted songwriter leaves the stage with a piece of your heart every time. But that’s OK – you get a big piece of hers with every song. At the very core is Ryan’s rich vocal style. Described as “so good – so distinct – it’s absolutely unforgettable” (Exclaim!), hers is a voice you pay attention to.

While growing up on the land her great-great-grandfather farmed in Middle Cove, Newfoundland, Sherry roller-skated to piano lessons on Saturday mornings, listened to Carol King records on rainy afternoons, and put on her best dress to dance to the Irish Rovers television show on Sunday nights. These blended traditions have earned her nation wide attention, extensive radio play and showcases across Canada, US and Ireland.
