ESDC Integrity Hackathon with SFU & UBC will be held virtually (online).

About this event

Are you interested in engaging in the field of data science or business intelligence? This hackathon offers a unique opportunity to develop your analytical and collaboration skills by working on a real-world problem that Service Canada currently faces. At this event, you will be able to build relationships with experienced mentors in the industry, including Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) data science professionals, SFU and UBC faculty members and alumni. Additionally, the possibility of future career opportunities with ESDC may also be an asset in setting your career goal!

About the Hackathon

Service Canada- the service delivery arm of Employment and Social Development Canada provides Canadians with a single point of access to a wide range of government services and benefits. It is committed to improving services for Canadians by working with partners to provide access to the full range of government services and benefits that Canadians want and need including Employment Insurance, Old Age Security, Job Bank, and the Social Insurance Number. In order to deliver these services and benefits, Service Canada interacts on a daily basis with thousands of individuals and businesses. As part of these interactions, properly validating information used to determine eligibility is key to ensuring the integrity of these programs.

For this hackathon, the focus will be on business information. Service Canada typically has identifying information on businesses, but potentially useful open-access information is left untapped due to patchy coverage, unknown quality and technological challenges. This hackathon will look to leverage open, publicly available information which may include for example; the length of time the business has been in operation, ownership information, business and industry type, customer and employee complaints, and inspection reports by local authorities, to name a few. The goal of the hackathon is to find this type of information, and process and present it to Service Canada employees in an easy to use manner that that helps them preserve the integrity of its programs. Example scenarios will be given at the start of the hackathon.

*Each team member is required to go through the registration process. Please include your team name during registration so that we can identify which team you belong to.
