Empowered To Connect Parent Training Simulcast

Generations Church in Nanaimo, BC

Mondays, starting Sept 24, 2018 6-8pm ** for 9 weeks **

Empowered To Connect (ETC) Parent Training is an interactive learning experience designed specifically for adoptive and foster parents, and those who support them.

ETC Parent Training equips parents with a holistic understanding of their child’s needs and development while empowering them with the tools and strategies to effectively meet those needs, build trust, and help their child heal and grow. The training is taught from a Christian perspective and focuses on a wide range of topics and issues relevant to adoptive and foster parents, including helping parents understand the impact of their child’s history, what they themselves bring to the parent-child relationship, the fundamentals of attachment, the impact of fear, and the importance of meeting their child’s sensory processing, nutritional and other physiological needs.

It is undeniable that the children we love and serve have unique histories and needs. As a result, we as parents must be willing to learn how to love and parent them well. This requires that we take on some new ideas and new ways of relating, communicating, and offering discipline. It means that we must be open to new ideas and learn how to use new parenting tools that will be effective in helping our children heal and grow.

The Connect Course includes the following nine sessions:

  1. Building a Foundation of Connection
  2. Understanding What Your Child Brings to the Relationship
  3. Examining What You Bring to the Relationship (Part 1)
  4. Examining What You Bring to the Relationship (Part 2)
  5. Attachment: Discovering the Heart of Connection
  6. Understanding the Needs of the Whole Child
  7. Putting It All Together: Connecting While Correcting (Part 1)
  8. Putting It All Together: Connecting While Correcting (Part 2)
  9. Putting It All Together: Connecting While Correcting (Part 3)

During the in-class sessions participants cover the above material contained in the ETC Parent Training Manual. In addition, the in-class sessions are supplemented by weekly assignments, including reading and a variety of participatory “at-home” exercises.

Married couples must attend this training together. If you are single, it is recommended that you invite someone from your support team (parent, friend, etc) to attend with you. We understand that unforseen circumstances may pop up but we encourage you to do everything possible to attend every simulcast and to complete the homework over the week. These assignments are critical to the training and learning process.

We are trying to keep the cost as low as we can, and we don't pay for the simulcast but there is a cost to printing the manuals. We will be asking for a small fee to be collected at the first session to contribute to the cost of printing the materials, plus the cost of books. We will have more information on that soon.

Participants will be required to obtain and utilize the following required resources for the course:

  • The Connected Child (2007), by Karyn Purvis, David Cross and Wendy Sunshine
  • Parenting Is Your Highest Calling: And Eight Other Myths That Trap Us in Worry and Guilt (2008), by Leslie Leyland Fields
  • Anatomy of the Soul (2010), by Curt Thompson
  • Attachment: Why It Matters (2012), DVD produced by the Institute of Child Development
  • Attaching in Adoption (Second Ed., 2012), by Deborah Gray

We look forward to seeing you there!
