Event description

Description

Ethics 101 is available to all social workers who have not attended this session before. This experiential learning opportunity will:

  • Identify the roots of the professional social work identity;
  • locate the ideologies that inform the values of our profession;
  • examine the tension between our professions values and the dominant ideology;
  • examine the intersection of oppression and privilege as the foundation for relational ethics;
  • support the development of a self-reflective process that uses an ethical decision-making tool to support ethical decision making.

A light lunch will be provided.

Questions? Contact the College's Professional Practice Consultant Annemieke Vink at annemieke.vink@nscsw.org.

All social workers associated with the Nova Scotia College of Social Workers must complete five hours of professional development in social work ethics over a recurring five year period. This is in addition to their annual professional development requirement (i.e. 40 hours for most members).

This requirement stems from a bylaw change at the 2014 AGM, and took effect in 2016. Anyone who was licensed at NSCSW in 2016 will have until December 2020 to complete their first five hours. Members who joined the College later will need to complete these hours within their first five years of registration (and every five years thereafter).

Taking Ethics 101 is just one way to accrue hours to satisfy this regulation. NSCSW members can learn more about options for fulfulling this requirement at http://nscsw.org/professional-development-in-social-work-ethics
