Event description
EvenSong: a numinous and inventive exploration of the jazz form

About this Event

Katie Diamond’s Sunday Jazz Cabaret is delighted to present EvenSong, a smart and sassy musical ensemble that will lighten up your late November afternoon with their joyous and broadly spiritual exploration of the jazz form. Join us at 8 Mill Road, Sunday, Nov. 24, 4-6 p.m., for this very special concert.

EvenSong began its life in 2016, with the aim of probing the potential of the contemporary concert experience to uplift and empower audiences in addressing global and personal challenges.

Earlier this year, our audience was on its feet for the sax solos of EvenSong’s Pete Woods, who accompanied Ginny Simonds in the first of the Katie Diamond Jazz cabaret concerts.

Pete is the founder of EvenSong, where his capacity to cross genres with an open sensitivity to spiritual resonance and energy finds expression. With a love of melody and phrasing at the heart of his musical offerings, Peter’s performances inspire and delight audiences. Pete is also the minister at MacKay United Church in Ottawa.

EvenSong members are eager to share music from their newest album: classic songs from the worlds of jazz and folk and gospel refashioned with an ear for jazz harmonies and passionate rhythms. From Professor James McGowan's leadership at the piano to one of the tightest rhythm sections in the National Capital Region (JP Lapensee and Jamie Holmes), to Peter Woods and Leah Cogan weaving lead lines of horn and voice, this band is a true jazz ensemble.

The songs are familiar, e.g. Billie Holiday's "God Bless the Child" and Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now", but new energy bubbles around and through these great songs. The show is inventive and grounded, soaring and earthy, quiet and rambunctious. A kind spirit permeates all the compositions and improvisations.

Pete’s collaborators in this venture comprise a potent and accomplished lot:

Leah Cogan, a singer and actor on both film and stage. As a graduate of Brown University and the Sheridan College Music Theatre program, she is a sought-after teacher, coach, and workshop facilitator. She was the winner of the 2009 CBC Triple Sensation competition.

James McGowan, an award-winning faculty member at Carleton University, and director of music at Trinity United Church (Ottawa). An active pianist of jazz, fusion, classical, and improvised musics, he is also a composer, arranger, music theorist, and conductor.

JP Lapensee, an active bass player, teacher, and recording artist in the Ottawa-Gatineau area. He performs with The Chocolate Hot Pockets, Modasaurus, and the HML Trio, which performs a weekly jazz jam session every Thursday at Brookstreet Hotel.

Jamie Holmes, an active drummer who performs with the likes of The Chocolate Hot Pockets, Thrust, Beats and Keys, Modasaurus, and the HML Trio. Since completing his undergraduate degree with a Bachelors in Performance from Carleton University, Jamie has become a JUNO nominated drummer, and has toured and performed all over North America, as well Europe and Australia
