Event description

Description

The rise of self-managed, self-produced artists coupled with the streaming revolution over the past decade has turned the music industry on its head. In this uncertain climate, smaller, boutique and independent labels are challenging the status quo once ruled by the majors. Where do labels - both large and small - fit into the current music industry ecosystem, and where do they fit within the new narrative of DIY? Is the label a dying breed or an evolving model?

Panelists:
Stuart Meyer - Sub Pop
Adam MacKinnon - Barsuk
Taylor Dutton - Eyrst
Adrienne LaBelle - Mint Records

Panelist Bios:

Stuart Meyer - Sub Pop

Before landing at Sub Pop for (going on) 22 years this December, I made my way through Billboard Magazine, Atco/Atlantic Records, Epic Records, Tower Records...the latter which led to Sub Pop in 1997. I've worked with a ton of artists at Sub Pop since taking over The Murder City Devils A&R in 1998-ish. I've been involved with The Shins, Iron & Wine and Wolf Parade from the start and brought The Head and the Heart, Washed Out and Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever to the label. I've also been our Production Manager since 2000.

Adam Mckinnon - Barsuk

Adam MacKinnon is a Midwest transplant who moved to Seattle with his bandmates in the early 2000's. His first job there was in the mailroom at Tooth & Nail Records. Following that he worked at his favorite local record store, Sonic Boom Records. In 2007 he got a job at one of his favorite record labels, Barsuk Records. Since then he's worn many hats along the way, and is now project managing some of Barsuk's releases, along with heading up the A&R department - his favorite part of the job. Adam also enjoys video editing, painting, going to tons of shows, and recording music.

Taylor Dutton - Eyrst

Taylor Dutton is a Portland native and a lifelong hip hop head. He is the President of EYRST, a Portland based hip hop focused record label and also does A&R work for Symphonic Distribution. His interests have always centered on small business which led him to attend the top entrepreneurship school in the country, Babson College, before moving back to Oregon and finishing his degree at University of Oregon in 2012.

In 2014 Taylor was approached by longtime friend and talented producer, Neill Von Tally, along with former NBA player Martell Webster. The two had a vision for a new label to shine a spotlight on the talented artists in the historically under-appreciated Portland hip hop community, and they wanted Taylor to build that label along with Neill.

Since the official launch in the summer of 2015 Neill & Taylor, along with their partner Sean, have grown EYRST to be at the forefront of the quickly growing Portland scene. The label has released 20+ projects from a variety of talented artists. EYRST releases have garnered attention from most major music publications including, Pitchfork, Complex, Billboard, Forbes, and many more.

Taylor’s passion is to use his drive and skills to give talented and hardworking artists a platform to be heard and continue to grow. To that end he has begun bringing artists on board to distribute with Tampa/Brooklyn based digital distributor Symphonic Distribution. He plans to continue to develop artists and grow the Pacific Northwest music scene for years to come.
