Event description
Exploring Sensory Processing

About this Event

Facilitators: Katherine Farrah and Emma Waite

Please join Katherine and Emma, Occupational Therapists from Pathways Health Centre for Children to dive into the world of sensory processing. They will define sensory processing, specifically focusing on the vestibular and proprioceptive inputs. The vestibular system helps to provide us with information regarding movement, gravity, and changes in head position as well as assists us in determining if we are moving and the direction of that movement. Difficulties processing vestibular information can result in a spectrum of challenges engaging in daily tasks from avoidance of movement (i.e. climbing, participating in gym) to craving movement (i.e. having a difficult time staying at circle or the dinner table). The proprioceptive system helps to provide us with information regarding where our body is in space. Difficulties in this area may result in difficulties with body awareness, grading of movement and motor planning, to seeking out deep pressure by crashing, hugging etc. This presentation will further your knowledge on these senses and help provide overall general strategies to help the children or students in your care with everyday sensory needs.
