Event description

Description

Join the University of Waterloo’s Sustainability Manager, Mat Thijssen, for a tour of the university’s LEED Platinum Certified Environment 3 (EV3) building. Mat will lead a one hour tour showcasing some of the building’s key sustainability features, as well as projects and other sustainability initiatives that are active in the surrounding area, including for naturalized gardening, stormwater management, waste minimization, and sustainable transportation. Attendees will come away with an understanding of the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) framework and design features that can improve energy and water performance, as well as reduce construction impacts of buildings. Mat will also discuss some of the challenges and opportunities of sustainable building design.

Mat Thijssen coordinates the University of Waterloo's sustainability activities and efforts, in partnership with a broad range of stakeholders on and off campus. He also provides support to the President's Advisory Committee on Environmental Sustainability. Prior to joining the University of Waterloo, Mat worked for three years with Sustainable Waterloo Region, a local environmental non-profit that helps convert organizational interest in sustainability into tangible action.

Please note spaces on this tour are limited so booking is encouraged. This tour will highlight indoor and outdoor features of the building so please dress appropriately for the weather.
