Crash Course on the Encaustic technique.
Encaustic painting is made by using two methods: warm beeswax mixed with pigments or cold beeswax prepared to have a certain spreadability. This is a 2000 years old technique, the most famous examples are the Greco-Roman Fayum portraits, but this technique has recently seen a real revival starting with Jasper Johns' American Flag series. Participants will learn how to prepare the support for both types of mediums, how to properly formulate encaustic paint and how to apply/maipulate it on the surface. This technique is also compatible with oil technique suggesting endless creative possibilities.
There will be a brief outline of encaustic painting history accompanied with historical and contemporary examples.
The class is limited to 10 participants. Materials are supplied.
