The Real Tempera Painting Crash Course
Much of today’s artists' materials are labled as "tempera" but this course will concentrate on a true tempera medium obtained from the hen's egg; both yolk and white are used and mixed with pure powdered pigments. Until the introduction of oil painting in the 15th century, tempera was the principal medium for all European paintings, illumination of manuscripts and decorating polychrome sculpture. Participants will learn how to make a proper support for tempera painting, how to prepare the medium and how to preserve it for the duration of the project. There will be a brief outline of the history of tempera painting accompanied with historical and contemporary examples. This technique is especially suitable for participants that are allergic to certain chemicals present in industrially produced paints.
Class is limited to 10 participants. Materials are supplied.
