The motivation to paint often starts with a desire to create a likeness of a loved one… a child, sibling, spouse, awesome auntie, or beloved grandparent. There are many approaches to portraiture, and many people learn how to paint portraits by first learning how to create an impactful and realistic drawing from a photograph. So bring a selection of your favourite character photographs to class, learn how to set up and draw a dynamic composition, complete a detailed portrait in pencil. Then… we’ll switch gears and extend what you’ve learned from your realistic drawing to experiments with looser, more expressive approaches to portrait-painting using the media that suits you best – acrylic, watercolour, pencil or pastel. Some drawing and painting experience is helpful but not mandatory.
