Sunzen Art Gallery is pleased to announce the Feburary 26th opening of its latest exhibition, Fable and the Prophets - Inside and Outside the Red Line, by highly-anticipated Chinese-Canadian artist, Yang Xiaolu. In this new series of works, the newly immigrated artist investigates his ambivalent emotion towards his home country, restrictions and centralization, as well as the confrontation of culture between the East and the West. With a fascination toward cosmic myth and supernatural power, Yang’s interests lie in the juxtaposition of eccentric objects that has symbolic meanings with historically or socially significant locations. He intuitively places fictional characters or imaginary objects, such as red lines, UFOs and Santa Claus, under the harmonious night sky of Zhongnanhai - the State Council of China, adding a surrealist and humorous vibe to his representational style. The symmetrical and consistent composition he employs throughout the series, along with the continuously extending horizon of Zhongnanhai creates a strong sense of space that pulls the viewer into his environment.
