About this event

This October 18, you’re invited to a special conversation with Adam Kahane (director at Reos Partners and author of Facilitating Breakthrough) and Alex Ryan (senior vice president of MaRS Partner Solutions) on facilitating positive social change with new approaches — to drive impact and solve our communities' most pressing challenges. Also participating will be a group of provocateurs from the youth, public sector and innovation communities who will evaluate and critique these approaches as the event unfolds.

In the face of increasing complexity and polarization, it is becoming harder for people to move forward together. Facilitation is supposed to help people collaborate, but the two most common methodologies — getting participants to subordinate their interests to the good of the whole, or enabling everyone to do their own thing — don’t really work.

Facilitating Breakthrough describes a new approach: transformative facilitation. It doesn’t choose the bossy top-down or the collegial bottom-up approach. It cycles back and forth between them. And rather than pushing people to collaborate, it removes the obstacles that stand in the way of everyone contributing and connecting equitably.

The book is for anyone who helps people work together — a facilitator, executive, manager, consultant, coach, organizer, mediator, stakeholder or friend.
