"Diversity in the City" is FACL Western's signature event of the year. The gala is an opportunity to showcase the extraordinary achievements of Asian Canadian trailblazers, learn about their journey and be inspired. We will also be presenting our FACL Western “Leaders in Diversity” Awards to recognize individuals, corporations and organizations who have shown a demonstrated commitment to diversity.
Come join us for dinner, hear from our inspiring speakers and make some new connections in the city.
KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Rumana Monzur
Rumana Monzur was born and raised in Dhaka, Bangladesh. She married at age 22 while studying for her bachelor’s degree in International Relations at the University of Dhaka. After the completion of her bachelor’s degree, she earned a master’s degree from the same university in 2004. Subsequently, she was appointed as a lecturer at the University of Dhaka, and in 2007, was promoted to assistant professor.
In 2010, Rumana left Dhaka to pursue her second master’s program in political science at the University of British Columbia. During her visit to Dhaka in the summer of 2011, Rumana told her husband of her intention to divorce him. Days later, he brutally attacked her, leaving her blind. With the assistance of UBC, her friends in Vancouver, and the Canadian government, Rumana returned to Vancouver with her parents and her five-year-old daughter. Her ex-husband was arrested and subsequently died in custody facing charges of attempted murder. Despite losing her sight, Rumana completed her master’s thesis on environmental degradation and human security. She then enrolled in law school at the Peter A. Allard School of Law at UBC and graduated in May 2017. Rumana is currently articling in the Vancouver office of DLA Piper (Canada) LLP, an international law firm.
Rumana has received numerous accolades for her contributions to diversity, including recognition as one of three Legal Leaders for Diversity in 2014 and winning the Hilda Janzen Memorial Award for Feminist Legal Studies in 2016. Rumana serves on the UBC President’s Office Working Committee on Disability Culture, Art and Equity. A frequent public speaker, she gave a TEDx talk in 2015 entitled “Yes, We can Reduce Violence Against Women.”
