Event Details

At a time when magazine publishers are faced with cutting costs, the art of fact checking is often the first casualty. But when readers lose trust in a publication, how long will it be before they cease to be readers?

This seminar will focus on magazine fact checking under ideal circumstances, but also—keeping the industry’s current fortunes in mind—show you how to make do with what you have when necessary. Attention will be paid to how to tell primary sources from secondary ones, what facts to check, how best to check them—and who should do the work. Copy editing and proofreading also will be discussed.

Conan Tobias is the editor, publisher, and founder of Taddle Creek, a Toronto-based general-interest literary magazine, and an editor with Quill & Quire, Canada’s book trade journal. He spent 15 years on the staff of Canadian Business magazine, initially as a fact checker and later as managing editor. He has been nominated for five National Magazine Awards.
