Event description

Description

With the growth of Organic certification, we are becoming more aware of the environmental effects of chemicals and water/energy consumption within the textile industry. However, more attention needs to be given to increasing the capacity and wellbeing of the people and communities who are growing and producing these fabrics.

As a special event during the 6th National Fair Trade Conference, the Fair Trade Fashion Showcase will create space to discuss where and how fair trade fits into the sustainable fashion movement in Canada.

Six Canadian designers will showcase their unique Fairtrade certified designs made with fabric from Mandella Apparels, a living wage textile factory in India. Video and photography will accompany the designs highlighting the producers of the raw material, the cotton weavers, and the cutting, natural dying and sewing of the final product by the Canadian designers. Designers and representatives from the sustainable fashion and fair trade communities will be present to talk through the challenges of creating an exclusive Fairtrade cotton designs, current social and labour disparities present in the textile supply chain, and possible steps to further integrate labour justice into the fashion industry.

The event will take place in SFU Harbour Centre, Teck Gallery Lounge and is open to all.
