Description

John Henry Newman: The Anglican and Catholic Mariology of a Marian Devotee

Following the Reformation mentality of “Sola Scriptura” which minimized Marian expression and devotion, Roman Catholics countered by maximizing all Marian expression and devotion.

John Henry Newman, having always had a personal devotion to the Virgin Mary, as an Anglican,
never went beyond the minimum that Scripture said of the Mother of Jesus. As a Catholic, he
avoided the excesses in Catholic Marian expression and devotion, by highlighting a
Christocentric and Ecclesiotypical Mariology; a balanced Mariology.

Deacon Peter Gittens
A native of St. Lucia, Deacon Peter Gittens has been a permanent deacon for the past 34 years.
He retired, this year, from Diaconate Formation in the Diocese of Hamilton as the Associate
Director of Diaconate Formation. He was also recently awarded the Hamilton Diocese Medal of
Honour.

Dr. Peter Gittens has had a long career in teaching theology beginning in 1970 as an instructor
of Religious Studies at Niagara University, New York. He currently teaches theology, part-time,
at St. Augustine’s Seminary in Toronto. In 2001, he went to New Orleans to teach philosophy
and theology at Our Lady of Holy Cross College, now the University of Holy Cross, retiring in
2009 with the rank of full professor of theology.

Deacon Peter Gittens holds graduate degrees in philosophy and theology, and two doctoral
degrees in theology: the Ph.D. in theological studies with a dissertation on the Mariology of
John Henry Cardinal Newman, defended in Oxford, and the S.T.D. (Doctor of Sacred Theology)
also in Marian Studies, with a dissertation on the Mariology of Rupert of Deutz, from the
Marianum in Rome.

Prior to going to teach in the USA, Deacon Peter worked in Religious Education with the
Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic School Board for 10 years, and with the Wellington Catholic
School Board for 16 years.
