Event description

Description

Tragedy and suffering can touch all of our lives and the lives of the people we care about. Understanding the best way to respond can be a hard road to navigate.

  • How would you respond if your best friend told you she's overwhelmed by her new baby and feeling depressed?
  • How would you respond if a teenager in your church told you she was assaulted at a party?
  • How would you respond if the person sitting beside you at church told you that they've had thoughts about suicide?
  • What would you do if you suspected a family member might have an unhealthy addiction?

Faith in Action is a Christian workshop for the church leaders and lay people in Smiths Falls that would like to better understand and support people going through difficult circumstances related to abuse, addiction, and mental health challenges. At this event we will have professionally trained counselors offer an overview of these topics as well as some best practices for responding in a helpful way.

What to expect:

  • A series of sessions and small group seminars with professionally trained Christian counselors to offer an overview, practical resources and a Biblical perspective on helping people that are in difficult situations
  • Local First Responders will outline the resources that they offer the people of Smiths Falls and what the life cycle of their involvement in a crisis looks like
  • Hear personal testimonies, ask questions, share resources, collaborate ideas and pray
  • Childcare is provided

Rev. Jon Ruby- Addictions Counsellor / Pastor / Social Enterprise Developer

In 2006 Jon founded a recovery program at Jericho Road Christian Ministries in Ottawa. The "Discipleship House"- a Christian, long-term, addiction treatment program focuses on helping addicts through Christian mentorship and living day-to-day in a structured community. From to 2006 to 2014 Jon worked full-time to see lives transformed and he helped many individuals and families trapped in the cycle of addiction. In September 2013 with the blessing of his leaders and the board at Jericho Road, Jon and his wife Vikki began their journey of starting a church in Downtown Ottawa- Union City Church. Jon Ruby was ordained on Jan 2016 under Open Bible Faith Fellowship. June 26th, 2016 marked Union City Church’s first public meeting. Today the church has a solid community in Ottawa’s urban center with a handful of ministries that continually bring Jesus to people. “We exist to put hope on a platform for everyone in our community to see.” Jon’s tools in ministry have been the 12 step program with Alcoholics Anonymous, as well as Elijah House and Ellel Ministry models of Inner Healing and Freedom. Jon and Vikki have two adult sons, and they are grateful for the joy, trust, and peace that life in Christ has brought into their family. In 2017 two filmmakers asked Jon if they could make a short film on the story of his life. To see the film go to https://vimeo.com/243896284
