Too many people in Australia are barely getting by. Family breakdown, child abuse and neglect, career stress, chronic disease and social inequality affect millions of people. Despite the best efforts of policy makers, services and community organizations, these social problems have not shifted for many years.

The Australian Centre for Social Innovation (TACSI) is designing solutions that will help more people in Australia thrive, not just survive. The organization’s flagship solution, Family by Family, was co-designed with families and is delivered by families.

Join us for this Global Leadership event featuring Dana Shen, the director of Family by Family, who will describe the key principles of the model. Family by Family is a social lab designed for the South Australian community, but the lessons the organization has learned can be applied to any public service in Canada.

Dana will also discuss how to scale and replicate a service while maintaining the integrity, values and principles of the model. Family by Family has been so successful that the organization is looking to scale the initiative across Australia.

TACSI is also developing solutions and helping organizations develop their innovation capabilities. Hear examples of what TACSI is doing, with a detailed discussion of service solutions as seen through the lens of Family by Family.

About the Speaker:

Dana Shen

Dana is the director of Family by Family. She began in this role in September 2013, and has had extensive experience in social services, working within the public sector in health services, child protection, policy and service management. Dana is Aboriginal/Chinese and a descendant of the Ngarrindjeri people in South Australia, and has a passion for working with Aboriginal people and communities.

Dana started as a community youth worker in two South Australian towns, worked in Aboriginal-specific projects and policy, and has worked at the executive level across health and child protection services, including running residential care services for children and young people.

Presented as part of the Social Innovation Canada series, which takes place from May 22–30, 2014 in four cities across Canada.
