Event description

Description

Family psychoeducation is an evidence-based treatment for chronic mental health and substance use problems. Providing families and other supportive personnel with education, support, and skills has dual benefit. For patients there are significantly reduced rates of relapse and hospitalization, increased medication adherence, reduced psychiatric symptoms, and reduced levels of stress. For family members, the benefits of psychoeducation programs include lower levels of burden and distress and improved family relationships. Positive outcomes for both individuals and families are often sustained over the long term.

Family Caregivers as First Responders enhances the family’s knowledge of mental illness and addictions, offers an opportunity for peer-group support, and builds skills to manage conflict, prevent relapse, and promote recovery for themselves and their loved ones.

This 6 sessions program (from April 4th to May 16th, 7:00 to 9:00pm ; no meeting on April 25th) is suitable for family caregivers and friends (including volunteers, Sunday school teachers, small group leaders) of individuals living with mental health and substance use challenges including depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, personality disorders, psychotic disorders, schizophrenia and substance use.

(This program is not a professional development training. We do not provide crisis intervention, phone support or medical consultation.)
