Event description

Description

Family Preservation is a key community-based service in BC, funded by the Ministry of Children and Family Development, in helping families struggling with child protection issues. This intensive model of family counselling primarily aims to assist parents in finding ways to meet the physical, emotional and developmental needs of their children, resulting in their enhanced safety and well-being. This certificate course is offered through CityU Canada’s continuing education programs and will help participants:

  • Build an understanding of Family Preservation as a distinct and unique professional family therapy model of service
  • Appreciate the complexity of working with families in collaboration with, and under the umbrella of, child protection
  • Gain insight into how current counselling theories of working effectively with families must be accommodated to successfully support families involved with the child welfare system
  • Learn practical applications of the model with common challenges for families involved in child protection

The certificate course is taught by Chris Burt, MA. Chris has been working with families, youth, and children for over 25 years in a variety of settings, including community-based group homes, hospital, school and day-program settings, and family counselling and outreach programs. Over the past 14 years Chris has studied, created and supervised Family Preservation Programs, and has trained many social workers and counsellors in BC on best practice principles in Family Preservation. He is a graduate of City University, and has worked with many community-based social service and government agencies. Chris is currently the Clinical Director of Hollyburn Family Services, as well as a trainer for the Ministry of Children and Family Development.
