Event description

Description

Join Sustain Ontario and the Centre for Hospitality and Culinary Arts at George Brown College for an interactive workshop day focused on exploring solutions to common Farm to School program challenges in Ontario.

Audience: Schools, school boards, Student Nutrition Programs, non-profits, public health and others who support and deliver Farm to School activities such as: bringing local food into schools, hands-on food literacy activities like gardening or cooking, farm tours, and engaging students in their food systems.

Event facilitators: Soni Craik and Stephanie Crocker, SCC Consulting, and Carolyn Webb, Sustain Ontario's Edible Education Network

Participants will have a chance to:

  • Learn about Farm to School models and best practices in Ontario and Canada by means of interactive discussions and presentations (names of presenters will be posted as they are confirmed)
  • Trouble-shoot common challenges and barriers to Farm to School activities in small groups
  • Explore collaborative activities and areas for continued conversation to support student health and wellness, food literacy, and Farm to School efforts in your community and across Ontario

The session will be tailored to the needs of participants based on answers that are provided in the registration survey.

Context: Over the years Sustain Ontario and its Edible Education Network (OEEN) have worked with a multitude of partners on Farm to School initiatives. We’ve noticed similar challenges (and related opportunities!) such as: food distribution, seasonality, infrastructure, food safety, policy, capacity, and evaluation. Many of these challenges are being corroborated by the Generating Success for Farm to School research project that is being undertaken by Gary Hoyer, professor at George Brown College and host of the event.

We invite you to come together with us on February 28th to learn from those within our network about solutions that have been applied to common challenges so that you can integrate these learnings into your own work and find opportunities to collaborate.

Registration: We have set the registration fee for the day at $75; however, cost should not be a barrier to your participation. Please get in touch if you would like to ask for a reduced rate or to have the registration fee waived. Lunch and snacks for the day will be provided.

We'd ask that people register by Friday February 1st if possible to give us an idea of numbers and to allow us to best tailor the event to participants' needs.

Registration is scheduled for between 8:30 - 9:00 am with the event beginning at 9:00 am.

Contact Carolyn Webb, Sustain Ontario, if you have any questions: cwebb@sustainontario.ca

We look forward to seeing you there!
