Event description

Description

Join the United Voices Choir and Chamber Orchestra for their 8th annual Spring Concert featuring music from Gabriel Fauré's Requiem and Morten Lauridsen's Lux Aeterna, two masterpieces of the sacred choral repertoire.

Gabriel Fauré's Requiem is one of the most beloved choral pieces, rich with beautiful melodies, harmonies and moments of joy. Although a requiem, it stands out for its serenity and gentleness, more of a lullaby than a painful experience.

Morten Lauridsen's Lux Aeterna is a haunting reflection of the translated 1000 year old text about Eternal LIght. Lauridsen's music also reflects the West Coast in colour and mood, drawing from the light of the San Juan Island where he grew up.

Both the Requiem and Lux Aeterna were composed as tributes to their respective late mothers, and are deceptively simple in their capacity to touch the listener. Lauridsen's search for hope and light among the suffering was much the same as the grief inspired Fauré's Requiem from 100 years earlier.

Unitied Voices Choir began as an outreach of the of Sunday morning Chancel Choir at the former Dunbar Heights United Church and continued to grow with the amalgamation of the Dunbar Heights and Ryerson United Church congregations. Since the first concert in 2009, it has become and opportunity for church and community members to sing sacred music at a high standard with professsional orchestral accompaniment.

This concert runs approximately 1.5 hours with an intermission.

United Voices and Chamber Orchestra is a Music Ministry program of Dunbar Ryerson United Church.
