Session Description

Inside Feminist Business Practice: The Feminist Business Model Canvas

Gender equality is one of the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals and an economic strategy supported by Canada’s current Government. While social and political activism are well known elements of a gender equality strategy, the role that entrepreneurs and innovators might play as society pursues these goals is only now being considered. Can leaders who care deeply about economic and social impact use business to end inequality and create a world where everyone flourishes?

Welcome to the community of entrepreneurial feminism.

Entrepreneurial feminism is a set of theories that explain how feminist values, enacted as we create and grow ventures, can drive gender equity and human equality in economic, political and social realms. Essentially, entrepreneurial feminists create financially sustainable commercial businesses that use feminist values such as agency, interindependence, and generosity to inspire new products, new markets, and new practices. Feminist business practices go well beyond the basic tenets of the conventional corporate diversity and inclusion dialogue. Entrepreneurial feminists combine feminist theory and thought leadership with entrepreneurial tools and mindsets to create businesses that are financially successful because they are centered on feminist values.

In this session, participants will learn how to use The Feminist Business Model Canvas™ (FBMC), a tool that helps entrepreneurs design change agency into the core of their revenue models. Participants will learn how the Feminist Business Model Canvas helps us build more innovative and transformational businesses using every element, from purpose to product to value chain. They’ll learn how and why the FBMC differs from the conventional business modelling approach, and how it invites entrepreneurs to focus on their strengths, capacities and values to establish meaningful, sustainable commercial enterprises. They’ll learn straightforward, effective ways to practice their values as they build their businesses.

If you are a feminist (any gender can be a feminist), and have been wondering how to apply your feminist values at work or in the design and growth of a new venture, this session will provide you with an overview of some of the core themes, tools and conversations happening in the community.

5 things you will do in this session:

  • Create or map your enterprise using the FMBC
  • Engage with values, concepts and practices that distinguish feminist enterprises from others
  • Learn about the feminist economy and the growing community of entrepreneurial feminists
  • Leave with actionable business insights to deploy in your own work
  • Leave feeling more hopeful about advancing gender equity in our lifetime
