Tempeh is a delicious and protein-rich cultured soy product. In this workshop, learn the ins and outs of making your own tempeh at home.

About this event

Do you enjoy tempeh, or are interested in trying it? Making tempeh at home is fun and affordable, plus it allows you to customize it to your taste by using not just soybeans but other legumes and grains, for your very own spin on this delicious nutty-tasting cultured food. In this workshop, we'll look at the history of tempeh, general technique, sourcing spores, types of ingredients, choices for tempeh containers, and all the options for creating the best fermentation environment in your home kitchen.

Instructor Bio: Lindsay Kearns learned home food preservation techniques from her parents, who had her assist with their annual tomato sauce canning marathons from a young age. Despite those labourious beginnings, her love of food in jars grew with her into adulthood, where it nests well into her general obsession for all things do-it-yourself. Her favourite pickle is bread-and-butter made with sliced cucumbers and onions, and this is her fourth year of teaching canning classes outside of her own kitchen.

The Compost Education Centre is in the process of examining the ways in which our program accessibility can be improved for all members of our community. This ticket gesture is by no means a fulsome examination of the systems of oppression that exist for people inside and outside of our community. We welcome your ideas and feedback.

The Compost Education Centre is located on unceded and occupied Indigenous territories, specifically the land of the Lekwungen speaking people—the Esquimalt and Songhees Nations. These nations are two of many, made up of individuals who have lived within the porous boundaries of what is considered Coast Salish, Nuu-Chah-Nulth and Kwakwa'wakw Territory (Vancouver Island) since time immemorial. At the CEC we seek to respect, honour and continually grow our own understandings of Indigenous rights and history, and to fulfill our responsibilities as settlers, who live and work directly with the land and its complex, vital ecologies and our diverse, evolving communities.

Organizer Compost Education Centre

Organizer of Fermenting Tempeh

The Compost Education Centre, situated on unceded Coast Salish territories, is a non-profit organization with charitable status. The CEC’s mission is to encourage composting, local food production, and conservation, through education to residents living within the CRD. Created as a community resource, the CEC’s intent is to lower barriers to building skills that support soil stewardship and ecological sustainability. Two of the ways the CEC meets this goal are through free and affordable workshop series for adults, and a diverse, interactive, science-based educational program for students and their teachers. The CEC is mandated to teach people of all ages how to create a biologically active, organic garden amendment, as well as why composting and soil conservation are crucial practices for mitigating climate change.
