Community Concert and Fundraiser for ACCT Kitchen

Join us for a special concert as part of the Festival of Arabic Music & Arts (FAMA), featuring concert soloist Waed Bouhassoun (Syria).

This is a benefit event, with all proceeds going to the ACCT Kitchen, an intiative created by The Arab Community Centre of Toronto (ACCT) and Roncesvalles United Church. The ACCT Kitchen provides newcomer women with opportunities to learn English, cook together and supplement their income by catering delicious, traditional Middle Eastern meals. The ACCT chefs will provide sample snacks prior to the concert.

Admission to the event is pay-what-you-can, with a suggested donation of $20.

Doors Open 7:00pm

About the Performer

Waed Bouhassoun is a young lute player and singer from Syria. From the time of her first audition in Aleppo, the specialists (Sammaïn) immediately recognised her talent and encouraged her to start her career.

In 2008, Bouhassoun was the star at the inaugural concert, along with Curro and Carlos Piñana, of “Damascus, the cultural capital of the Arab World” in the Ambassadors’ Hall of the Alhambra Palace in Granada. She interprets the poems of Wallada and Ibn Zaydoun in her music. The concert was broadcast by several televisions of the Arab world.

In March 2008, Bouhassoun performed at the Auditorium of the Opéra Bastille in the world premiere in Paris, in the framework of the “Imaginaire” Festival where she sang poems of the great mystic Rabi’a al ‘Adawiya, accompanied by the player of nay Kudsi Erguner, a muezzin of Istanbul, a kanoun player and a percussionist.
