Description

Join us October 21, 2017 at 8:00 am for a field trip to two important sites East of Edmonton. Caroline Hudecek-Cuffe, Pamela Mayne Correia, Aaron Wilson, and Wendy Unfreed of Alberta Culture & Tourism will be guiding the tour to the Viking Ribstones and the recent Viking Reburial location. This will be a great opportunity to learn about Indigenous history, forensic anthropology, spirituality and ceremony if you missed their talk on the Viking Burial back in January.

The Viking Ribstones are an active ceremonial site for Indigenous people. These pictographs are the only ribstones left in their original location in Alberta.

The Viking Burial is an example of the new relationships that are developing between archaeologists, government and First Nations.
In 2016, human remains were found eroding out of a farmers field near Viking. These remains were excavated and reinterred in a safe place in the field with respect, ceremony, and archaeological documentation. This project involved cooperation between Alberta Culture and Tourism, the Confederacy of Treaty 6 First Nations, Treaty 7 Management Corporation, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, forensic anthropologist Pamela Mayne Correia, the RCMP, and landowners Brian and Dolores Rozmahel.
On this field trip we'll learn about the excavation process, the results of analysis of the remains, and the ceremony and spirituality involved in their reburial.

We've booked a comfortable tour bus, with a bathroom and PA system. Snacks will be provided. Please bring a lunch, good shoes, and weather appropriate clothing.

The price is $40 to help with the cost of the bus. For insurance reasons, you must be an SAS member to participate in field trips and other events. SAS membership is $20. Register here for the SAS.

We will meet at the Rundel Park Family Center
(0A2, 2903 113 Ave NW, Edmonton, AB T5W) and take a bus out to our first stop. Contact alexandra.burchill@gmail.com if transportation to the meeting area is an issue.
